Pop Rocks - MTV 2001
MTV: You just finished your first movie.
Were people looking for you to act, or was it something you wanted
to do?
Britney Spears: It was something I was looking to do. I
was looking at a bunch of different scripts, but this was the one
that really caught my eye. It's just really heartfelt. I saw it for
the first time [the other day and] I was really, really
excited. It was bizarre seeing yourself on the big screen! I was
watching it like, "Ah, my gosh!" I cried in it. It was so weird when
I was watching it ... I'm not me. I'm not Britney Spears. I'm this
dorky girl named Lucy. I don't have much makeup on, and I'm not
really glamorous. It was just bizarre [to see] me playing someone
else. I got so lost in the character.
MTV: What scene in the script made you
think, "Yeah, OK, this is it. I've got to do it"?
Spears: It's a teen movie, but it's talking
about real issues that teenagers deal with all the time. One of the
girls has an eating disorder. One of the girls was date-raped, one
of my best friends [in the movie]. I'm always wanting to please my
father [in the movie]. I want to do what he wants me to do when I
should just do what makes me happy. The whole movie is about this
journey that the three of us best friends take, finding ourselves
and what we want out of life and getting our friendship back.
Friends are all you have at the end of the day. When your boyfriend
breaks up with you, who do you call? Your girlfriend. I just love
that message.
MTV: Are we going to see you singing in the movie?
Spears: There's a lot of music in it. It's a road trip, so
we're always listening to rock music, fun music, pop music.
MTV: Will your album have any tracks from the movie?
Spears: Yeah, "Overprotected" and "I'm Not a Girl."
MTV: Everybody who shoots movies talks
about how you have to wait hours between scenes. Was that hard for
you?
Spears: Yeah. It's totally different than what I'm used
to. I'm used to being on the road and touring, [going] here, there.
It was a very good experience for me, because I got to slow down a
bit. There's a lot of waiting around, which was good for me. I did
yoga and I read a lot of books. It was almost like a vacation.
MTV: Do you see yourself doing this
in the future?
Spears: I would love to. I gained a lot of confidence. I'm
so confident onstage, but it was my first movie. I didn't know what
I was doing, but I proved to myself that I could do it. Now, with
the next one, I'm like, "I really want to challenge myself."
MTV: Do you find similarities between your life and this
character?
Spears: No. I think Lucy and Britney are very different,
but there are some things that are similar. Lucy is very naive.
She's very dorky. I hope I'm not that dorky, but she keeps to
herself a lot. She writes in her journal a lot. I do that, too.
MTV: You recorded a song with your
boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, for your new album. How was that?
Spears: Justin and [choreographer/songwriter] Wade Robson
wrote it for me, and it's called "What It's Like to Be Me." It's a
very cool song. It's very rock, and Justin did the background vocals
on it.
MTV: How was it working together?
Spears: I was a little nervous at first. I'm
used to going in there and it's like work. It was kind of
awkward at first, 'cause I was nervous doing my vocals [in front of
him] for some reason. I was like, "Ooh." But then, I totally forgot
he was my boyfriend. I said, "Britney, just do the vocals. Don't be
nervous. Don't be retarded like this." It ended up being fine,
actually. At the very end, I got the very best vocals I've ever
done.
MTV: Sometimes when you work with somebody that is close
to you, it can be a total nightmare. But they can also get the best
out of you. It sounds like that's what happened.
Spears: Right. He definitely pushed me.
MTV: Did you learn something new about
him that you didn't know through this process?
Spears: He's very good at doing vocals. [Laughs]
MTV: Do you have plans to work together again?
Spears: Definitely, in the future. I'd love to.
MTV: I heard he wants to act, now that you were in this
movie. Do you guys have plans to do something together onscreen?
Spears: That would be cool, maybe in the future. We
haven't really thought of anything just yet. We'll see.
MTV: Is Justin your first love?
Spears: Actually, I had a love before him, but he's my
first deep love, yeah. I had a young love, a puppy love, before him.
He is definitely my first true love. I'm very much in love.
MTV: What are you talking about in the first single, "I'm
a Slave 4 U"?
Spears: The Neptunes did the song, and it's really just
about being a slave to music. Wanting to go out with girlfriends and
just forgetting about everyone around and having a good time. It's
very different, and really funky.
MTV: You also cover Joan Jett's hit, "I
Love Rock 'n' Roll." Can we say that this album is going to have a
little more of a rock feeling?
Spears: I think so, yeah. It definitely [has] more of a
rock flair.
MTV: Does that mean you're moving out of the pop area?
Spears: Pop music is popular music. I'm just bringing pop
music to a different level. It's always going to be pop music.
That's what I love to do. I love to dance, and pop music
incorporates that. I'm just bringing it to the next level. Trying.
[Laughs]
MTV: How do you feel when the press and the critics use
you as a touchstone in talking about some of the younger singers
who've come out in the last few years?
Spears: I think 'cause we're all real young and we all
have blond hair or whatever, they're going to say we're all like
each other. But if they really look at our music and our talent,
we're so different in so many ways. I think it's kind of flattering
that they compare me to them. They all work very, very hard and are
all very gifted and very talented.
MTV: Do you find it flattering to be
referred to as the new Madonna?
Spears: Yeah!
MTV: What are the things you feel like you have in common
with her?
Spears: I think that we have the same drive. When we want
something, we get it. As far as our music and our talent goes, we're
very different. Onstage we have the same drive, too. I just saw her
show and she's just amazing. She was flawless. It was very
inspirational for me, 'cause my show is about to come up. I have so
many things I want to do after watching her. She's amazing, but I
think we're very different in a lot of ways. It is flattering that
they say we're alike.
MTV: And what things do you think are different?
Spears: Her whole personality is totally different than
mine. We look different. We both sing pop music, but it's a
different kind of pop music.
MTV: Your relationship with your mother is amazing, but
you never talk about your father. Why?
Spears: Me and my father, we're just as close as me and my
mom, but I think it's just something about women. [Mothers and
daughters] have more of a connection or something. I'm really close
to him, but I'm just a girly girl. I'll always be a daddy's girl,
but he treats me like a baby sometimes. I feel more open with my
mom. I think I can talk to her more. He's very overprotective of me.
MTV: Michael Jackson asked you to
perform with him at his tribute concert. Did Michael contact you
directly?
Spears: He did call me. He was like, "Hello,
can I speak to Britney, please?" And I was like, "Who is this?" And
he goes, "This is Michael Jackson." And I was like, "No, this is
not. Who is this?" Michael Jackson calling your phone in the middle
of the day?
He was like, "It's Michael. It's Michael Jackson."
Finally, I was like, "Is this really him? I don't know!" I was like,
"OK, how are you?" And he started talking to me more and I realized
it was him! I'll never forget that moment, ever.
MTV Latin America's Ruth Infarinato discovered that Britney is
ready for her close-up, has found true love and won't check Caller
ID when someone rings claiming to be Michael Jackson.
Teen People (2000)
For starters, he, like Superman, seems to move faster than a speeding bullet as he follows Britney Spears around New York City. Ever since the pop star's stretch limo peeled away from MTV's Times Square studios (where she just finished cohosting Total Request Live with Melissa Joan Hart), Brit-Man has been chasing her on foot, dodging taxi cabs and tourists while in hot pursuit. Six blocks later, a red light allows him to catch the star-and his breath. Barechested, with a red T-shirt tied around his neck (that's his cape) and the word "Brit-Man" scrawled in black marker on his left arm, the twentysomething superfan peers into the limo's tinted glass. "I love you, Britney!" he shouts. "Roll down the window!"
"Lord!" says Britney, laughing. Her bodyguard, Robert Feggans---aka Big Rob---is not. "Give him an autograph," he advises. "Hopefully, that'll make him disappear."
When Rob cracks the window, Brit-Man is rendered speechless as he catches sight og his idol. "Hi," Britney says sweetly, signing the scrap of paper that Brit-Man has handed to Rob. Once finished, she hands it back to Rob, who gives it back to the shell-shocked fan. It's not until Rob rolls up the window that Brit-Man finally regains his voice: "I love you, Britney!"
A few days later, Britney is dining on southern cuisine (her favorite) at Virgil's, a Times Square restaurant not far from where Brit Man got her signature. :The fans are even crazier in Canada," says the Kentwood, LA., native. Don't misunderstand: She means that in a good way. The week before, on September 23, her People's Choice Favorite International Artist win at Canada's Much Music Video Awards was the event's biggest surprise. "They were announcing the nominees. They were Madonna, Ricky Martin, Lauryn Hill..I was like, 'I'm not winning this! Whatever!'" she says. "But the crowd was screaming my name, which was really cool, and then [the presenter] said my name, and I was like, 'Oh my goodness!'"
Madonna and Lauryn Hill have had tremendously successful careers, but it its arguable that no female solo artist rocked planet Earth in 1999 like Britney Jean Spears. Release in November 1998, her first single, ".Baby One More Time," shot to No. 1 in 15 countries, including the U.S. At press time, her debut disc of the same name has sold more than 9 million copies in the U.S. alone, placing her second in 1999 album sales only to her Jive label mates Backstreet Boys. In just a few months, the former Mickey Mouse Club kid became the darling of MTV (think schoolgirl uniform), fashion (think Tommy Hilfiger campaign) and the media (who could forget that Rolling Stone cover?). Concert and publicity tours took the southern belle from Germany to Japan and back. In November, she broke the record for the most MTV Europe Music Awards won by a single artist (four); heard that she'd won four major 1999 Billboard Music Awards, including Female Artist of the Year; and expected to be nominated for a number of American Music Awards. By year's end, she was even immortalized in plastic, thanks to Play Along Toys, Inv., a company that has manufactured six different Britney dolls.
But that was last year. Can Ms. Spears possibly top herself in 2000? If she accomplishes half of what she has planned, let's just say we ain't seen nothing yet.
"I really want to do a movie," says Britney as she butters a biscuit. "There are, like, twenty scripts---but I haven't taken them seriously because I knew I didn't have time [to make a film]." Perhaps inspired by fellow former MMC stars Keri Russel---a Golden Globe Award winner for Felicity, whose film Mad About Mambo hits theaters sometime this spring---and 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake (his tentatively titled The Wonderful World of Disney TV movie, Cover Girls, airs February 20 on ABC), Britney will spend the first few months of 2000 looking for the perfect part. Just don't expect her to be the leading lady.
"To go all out and have the lead role---I'd be scared having that much pressure on me," says Britney (although she was the understudy for the lead in an off-Broadway play called Ruthless when she was 10). "It would be fun to do a teen movie---maybe a good supporting role where I could show my acting ability."
With the competition for teen-oriented roles so hot and heavy that even twentysomethings want in on the action, you'd think a pop singer would have a hard time jockeying for position with full-time actors. Studio heads don't seem to see it that way, though. "Without ever having done a movie, Britney is on the Hollywood A-list," says Larry Rudolph, one of Britney's two managers ('N Sync's mentor Johnny Wright, is the other). Rudolph adds that Miramax cochairs Bob and Harvey Weinstein want to have a meeting with her. "She gets asked to do every [teen] movie that the major actresses are being asked to make." That includes Scary Movie, a slasher-flick satire out later this spring, in which Dimension Films says it attempted to cast her, but her rigid 1999 tour schedule wouldn't allow it.
Judging by the reception Britney gets at the New York City premiere of the romantic comedy Drive Me Crazy, she's already a movie star. As a glittering Britney steps from her limo, fans (including the omnipresent Brit-Man) start hyperventilating and jumping the barricades while the paparazzi go wild. You'd think that Britney, and not Melissa Joan Hart, was the star of this film.
In a sense, she is. Hoping to tap into the singer's enormous fan base, Twentieth Century Fox changed the title of the film Next To You to Drive Me Crazy, after the album version of Britney's his song, not long before and the movie's opening weekend. In return, Britney helped promote the film, appearing with new friend Melissa-who makes a cameo in Britney's music video for "(You Drive Me) Crazy (The Stop Remix!)"--- on TRL and at Crazy's New York City premiere.
With her feature-film debut still to come, Britney has already begun making inroads on the small screen. Recently, she was scheduled to film at least one episode of Dawson's Creek, her favorite show (back when she had time to watch TV). "I'm not going to be playing myself," says Britney, who already did that last fall on Melissa's series, Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. Though she hasn't seen a script, she hears that she may be playing, "um, Dawson's love interest."
Actually, she admits, "I have not idea what I'm going to do. Ther was talk of me being a dork and Katie Holmes wanting to make me over, then all of a sudden I'm beautiful-that's when Dawson starts to like me." At press time, Columbia TriStar, which produces Dawson's Creek, said that the show's writers have yet to develop a plotline for her.
For all her acting aspirations, Britney wants her fans to know that making and promoting her sophomore album will be her main focus in the first year of the new millennium. Last November, she traveled to Sweden to reteam with producer Max Martin (Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion), who cowrote and produced both ".Baby One More Time" and (You Drive Me) Crazy." But don't expect a soundalike sequel. She wants the follow-up to be daring and different-starting with the CD jacket. "I hated the [first] album cover," she says of the girlish shot taken at one of her first promotional photo sessions back when she was 15. This time, she says, "I have all these ideas." One possibility might be to hire photographer Herb Ritts, who is famous for his ultrasexy black-and-white celebrity portraits. "He's done Madonna and he did Janet Jackson-remember when she made her comeback?" she says, alluding to Janet's makeover, which was orchestrated by Ritts when he directed her "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" video.
Like her idol, Madonna, Britney understands the importance of an ever-evolving image. So she's making one big change, effective immediately. "I'm over the belly," she says. "I don't ever want to show my belly again. I read in a magazine 'Britney show her belly in every interview.' I was like, No, I don't! I don't show my belly in everything!"
As she lunches at Virgil's, Britney learns that her friend Melissa Joan Hart is in the gossip pages for showing her belly-and more---on the recent covers of Maxim and Bikini magazines. The photos are said to have so incensed the company that owns the right to her Sabrina character that they said they would call for her removal from the show unless she issued a public apology.
"Did anybody say anything about Jennifer Aniston when she was on the cover of In Style [nearly nude]?" Britney asks, getting angry. "Melissa is 23. She can do what she wants. She's a woman, and she's trying to be sexy.
"I've been through this with Rolling Stone," she continues. "That wasn't me, that's not my personality. It was like a girl playing dress-up, you know what I mean? When I saw the pictures, I was like, 'Wow!' Then all this [negative] stuff came out about it, and I was like, 'Well that's their opinion'. I'm a Christian. I go to church. But my mom taught us, 'Don't be ashamed of you body. It's a beautiful thing.'
"My heart goes out to [Melissa]. She has to be true to herself. She's a strong person; she'll be fine. She knows the pictures were beautiful. They were tastefully done."
Britney is a much stronger, much more vocal young woman than she was when this TEEN PEOPLE reporter first lunched with her pre-".Baby One More Time" fame back in the summer of '98. The then 16-year-old was so shy that she could barely speak or look up from her plate. These days, Britney has self-assurance to spare. And you get the feeling that this is just the beginning. Could it be because her 18th birthday, which falls on December 2, is almost upon her?
"I think eighteen is a big deal for some reason," she says. "You are an adult for some time now, especially when she's on tour. She may be younger than all her dancers, who are in their 20's, but she commands a respect that's unusual for someone her age, according to Boyz N Girlz United singer Robbie Carrico, 18, whose group opened for Britney last year (and who escorted her to the Drive Me Crazy premiere). "She's the person they could all come and talk to," he says. "Before a show, she would always lead us in a prayer."
Britney's proving to be a leader on the charity front too. This summer, the tentatively named Camp Britney will celebrate its inaugural season. A sort of Fame-style training ground for underprivileged teens, Camp Britney's goal is to attract top choreographers, acting coaches and other entertainment-industry professionals to New York State for a few weeks during the summer. Britney hopes that teens can develop confidence and a stronger sense of self through the arts.
Lord knows she has. "The critics can talk about my hair, my boobs and everything," she says dismissively. "[But] when they start talking about my singing and my performances and my dancing."
Then what? Easy: then she'll fight back with her music and hit them, baby, one more time.
If Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound, and Spider-Man can capture villains with wrist-spun webs, what, then, can Brit-Man do?
Rolling Stone (1999)
Admittedly that trap is carefully baited by a debut video that shows the seventeen year old singer cavorting
around like the naughtest of schoolgirls. But,as Spears points out nothing is actually revealed. "All i did was tie up my shirt!" she says, addressing the critics who would hunt her down like gay teletubbys. "Im wearing a sports bra under it". Sure, I'm wearing thigh-highs, but kids wear those it's the style. Have you ever seen MTV all those girls in thongs?
Spears' left thigh is presently adorned by several small plastic disics that are wired to a neuromuscular stimulator. A dance rehersal accident has temporarily confined Spears to her parents' ranch style house in rural-burban Kentwood, Louisiana, when she should be out promoting her white-hot debt, Baby One More Time, 1999's biggest top selling pop album so far. Saying home has its compensations: As Spears holds forth, her mom, lyne, a second-grade teacher sits on the carpet in the wood-paneled livingroom, fluffing and folding the laundry, If it wernt for the diamond-laden tennis bracelet that Britney just bought her, you'd think her daughter was a vacationing collage kid not a pop sensation with an eleventh-grade education.
The song that put Spears on top is a strutting statement of intent called "Baby One More Time" and that ellipsis tells a tale. The three dots mask a chorus hook line "Hit me, Baby" that some have taken as a masochistic come-on. "it doesn't mean physically hit me," says Spears. "It means just give me a sign basically. I think it's kind of funny that people would people would actually think that's what it ment. Perhaps the liguistic confusion arises from the fact that the creative force behind "Baby One More Time" is the Swedish Ikea-pop maestro Max Martin, who is also behind Backstreet Boys and Robyn. As cowriter and co-producer on the record Martin would run lyrics past Britney, ten years his junior, for approval. " I asked them to change the words to Born to Make You Happy". It was a sexual song." reveals Spears, who cleaves to the Baptist faith said, "This may be alittle old me.' Because image thing. I don't want to go over the top. If I come out being Miss Prima Donna, that wouldn't be smart. I want a place to grow."
1960 Elvis has been kidnapped by Uncle Sam. Buddy Holly is dead, and Little Richard has found the lord. Into the vacuum rises a counterrevolutionary force of adenoidal adolecents like Bobby Vee, Frankie Avalon, Fabian and former Muuseketeer Annette Funicello. These pop puppets, was their Tin Pan Alley songs and Sta -Brite smiles, actually managed to neutralize rock & roll's threat for several years.
It's happening again. Welcome to the new Teen Age. In a distant demographic echo of the postwar baby boom, the American teen population has reached the kind of critical mass that makes culture industry sit up and listen. Teen spending power is reshaping pop culture, filling our TV screens with teen dramas and our multiplexe with teen movies. It has also put a perky new beat on the pop charts, where devotional vaporings of boy bands have vanished the roiling rock angst of the early to mid-ninties. 'NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, 98 degrees are now choking on dust from the high stepin' heels of Miss Britney Spears.
Spears, who shares a manager with 'NSYNC and Backstreet Boys, screamed off the production line early this year and became the first solo artist of the Sound Scan era to lodge a debut single and album atop the charts simutaneosly, in the album's first week of release. But for all the fan-mag prose that greeted Spears' explosive marketpalce entry, we know precious little about her beyond an image that hints at several stereotypes. Is Spears bubblegum jailbait, jaded crossover diva or malleable Stepford teen? Who knows? Whether by design or not, the queen of America's new Teen Age is distinctly modern anomaly: the anonymous superstar.
Lynne Spears is issuing crip directions to the family's home in Kentwood, an hour north of New Orleans. Turn off highway 55" says the husky voiced Lousiana native, " then onto 51 turn right when you pass the burning bush." The Burning Bush?" A bar? Restaurant? Strip club? "No it'a actualy bush that's burning in our neighbor's yard. You can't miss it." Such religous portent is fitting, for, in record industy terms at least, Britney Jean Spears is a golden child the chart topping apotheosis of a generationthat's breathing life into an imperiled business. MTV Vj Carson Daly is intimatley acquainted with the habits of teenagers not just through dating the newly twenty year old scream queen Jennifer Love Hewitt but via his stewardship of the station's afternoon call in and e-mail show, Total Request Live.
"Teens don't have an attention span anymore," Says Daly, 25. "They just want to feel good for those four minutes, then go hit the Internet. They don't want to take this to seriously, and they wanna move tempo is everything. Britney is a poster child for them." Being a generational mascot brings with it certian responsabilities. "You want to be good example for kids out there and not do something stupid," Spears says. "Kids have low self-esteem, and then the peer pressures come and they go into a wrong crowd. That's when all the bad stuff starts happening, drugs and stuff. I think if they find something that keeps them happy writing, drawing, anything like that then they'll have confidence.
Spears, who won her first talent show when she was six, sounds more middle-aged then teenaged as she delivers this brisk message. Doesn't she think that people her age struggling with self-esteem because of a torrent of media images that promote feelings oof inadequacy? Spears thinks about this for a moment. "When people see things on TV that they can't do," she ventures, "that should make them want to go out there and make something of themselves. That's how I looked at it." The very first low, aching "Ooh Baby-by bay-by" that Britney Spears whispered into the public's ear strongly suggested that this wasn't your average seventeen year old.
It's still hard to equate those salarious syllables with the basketball plaing churchgoing schoolkid who would travel an hour to shop at her nearest Abercrombie and Finch. As Max Martin says, "People like this song then they see the video and it's like, 'Fuck!'"You can see that kid in the family photographs and Britney-bila that dominates the walls of the Spears household. Nestled among them near the picture of Britney with Ed McMahonfrom her Star Search proformance in 1992 is a picture of the star with her prom date, a gangly youth wearing moccasins with his dress pants.
This is Reg, Britney's only boyfreind with whom she had a two-year relationship. It came to an end when strains of her budding career began to take their toll. "It wasn't that I was changing," says Spears. "We broke up before any of my success happened. He became insecure with himself, I felt. I wasn't gonna do anything I'm straight up honest person and if I as gonna do something I'd tell him I was going to do something. I was real head over heels in love. I dont think I'll ever love somebody like that again. I just woke up one day and click, it was gone."
Spears shrugs off the rumors linking her with both Lance Bass and Justin Timberlake of 'NSYNC. "Overseas they say it's Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys," she notes wryly. Right know, she says she prefers to concentrate on her work rather romance. " I have," she says, "No feelings at all"
Britney Spears extends a honeyed thigh across he length of the sofa, keeping one foot on the floor as she does so. Her blond-streaked hair is piled high, exposing two little diamond earrings on each ear lobe her face is fully made-up, down to carefully applied lip liner. he baby path logo of Spears' pink t-shirt is distended by her ample chest , and her silky white shorts cling snugly to her hips. She cocks her head and smiles receptively. But hold on. It's not like that. You' re falling into the same trap as the lovelorn youths who call Spears' local florist to send her long -stemmed roses and the randy fellows outside the MTV studios with prom invites scrawled on their chests.

Online Host: Do you like chatting on AOL?
Britney Spears: Well, my knee is a lot better. I had surgery on it like four days ago and it's a lot better. It's probably going to take four weeks for me to be able to dance again. But I just have to listen to the doctors and do what they tell me to do so I won't injure it even more.
Britney Spears: I was probably eight years old when I really started singing.
Britney Spears: Well, really, with being on the road it's really hard to stay in shape. But, I guess just walking in all of the airports and doing the shows every night probably keep me in shape.
Britney Spears: I have to say that's the best feeling in the world to see all of my fans singing the words to my songs and it's just like so overwhelming. It's really cool.
Britney Spears: If things slow down for me, I will probably go to college. But if things tend to stay really busy I'll probably do this for the rest of my life. Because this is so much fun. I love what I'm doing now and it's just like I found my job at an earlier age and this is what I'm supposed to do.
Britney Spears: No, I'm not with 'N SYNC anymore. Tatyana Ali and B*Witched are opening for them.
Britney Spears: In my spare time, well usually I talk on the phone with my friends. And I'm usually doing my studies from school. And just talking on the phone with my mom. And like going to the movies. I love going to the show. So going to the movies. And a couple of years from now I would probably like to continue to do what I'm doing now and just hopefully be more of a well-known artist and someone like Madonna or Janet would be really cool. And just hopefully be a success around the world.
Britney Spears: Really, I didn't have that much time to spend with them, you know, to really get to know them because they were so busy doing their thing, I was so busy doing my thing. And the only time we really saw each other was at lunch or dinner before the show. But, probably Lance because he's from Mississippi and that's where I'm from. Well, I'm like 30 minutes away from Mississippi.
Britney Spears: Well, there's talk of me being on "Dawson's Creek," like three episodes of that for next season. So, I'm really happy about that because I love the show.
Britney Spears: I don't have a cast on my leg. I have like actually nothing on it. I have butterfly stitches on it because they just went in with a scope. They didn't have to really cut me. Because they had to clean up all the chips of bones that were in my knee. So I don't have a cast. But if I did and I saw him, I would let him sign my cast.
Britney Spears: Probably both. You know, I'll have a lot of influence on it as well as a lot of other people.
Britney Spears: The best present I ever got, probably my collector doll that I got this year. She was so pretty. She like looked like an older woman and she had a hat on and I loved her and it just reminded me of my grandmother. And, probably, the ring I got this Christmas as well. It was really pretty because my little sister got one, my brother got one, and I got one. And it's just really, really pretty.
Britney Spears: When my leg gets better, which will probably be in three or four more weeks. I'm not really sure. When I'm able to, you know, dance on my leg again, I'm going to do the second video and it's going to be awesome.
Britney Spears: "Sometimes." And there's going to be a lot of dancing in it. Even more dancing than "Baby One More Time" because, even though it's a mid-tempo song, I'm able to dance a lot in it though still. The choreographer is brilliant and he's like, you know, working away to where the dancing is just really out there and crazy. So I'm so excited and that's why my leg HAS to be better.
Britney Spears: Yes. I have a little sister and she's 7 and her name's Jamie Lynn, and I have an older brother, he's 21 and his name is Brian.
Britney Spears: Probably singing.
Britney Spears: Yeah, I have thought about my next album. But, I probably want to grow as an artist and have songs that I can probably relate to more because I'm getting older and I'll have older songs, per se, you know.
Britney Spears: You know, it's really cool because you have, my friend's at home and like when I need to talk to them we stay on the computer forever and she's talking to me and I'm talking and you can just, you know, catch up on all the old stuff. Because I'm never home and I never really get to experience talking on the phone with my friends that much because of the phone bill and everything. So AOL is awesome.
Britney Spears: No, I love country music, but I really don't sing country music because I sing pop music. But, I mean, like, oh, of course, in the car I sing all kinds of music.
Britney Spears: Who are the choices? I haven't seen ėShakespeare in Love.î I don't know. I don't really get the chance to see any movies. But I'll just say "Shakespeare in Love." I haven't even really seen it, but I hear it's really, really good. I haven't seen any movies out lately. I'm really embarrassed.
Britney Spears: Well, I shop usually at BB, it's a really, really cool store. And Abercrombie & Fitch is like the store to go to because when I'm on the road, that's all I wear, is comfy clothes. But, like, when I go out to eat or go out somewhere, I usually dress up in stuff like BB.
Britney Spears: Actually, I don't have her new record, but I've seen her perform before and she's really, really wonderful.
Britney Spears: I'm from Louisiana. Kentwood, Louisiana.
Britney Spears: A guy that has a wonderful personality and that can make me laugh and has a lot of confidence, I find very sexy.
Britney Spears: No, I don't have a boyfriend. But I have to see you before I go out with you!
Britney Spears: You know, really I'm not that much of a "Stars Wars" person. I'm not a big fan of that, but I hear that it's going to be really awesome, so I would probably go check it out.
Britney Spears: That would be nice! I mean if that happened that would be really wonderful, but I would never get my hopes up for something like that. That would just be out of this world.
Britney Spears: I'm starting to write right now. Yeah, I've been writing recently a lot. So, yeah.
Britney Spears: Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. Otis Redding was really cool. Those are probably the main three.
Britney Spears: All my life I've always known I wanted to be a singer because I've always been singing. But after ėThe Mickey Mouse Club,î that's when I realized that I wanted to make a career out of singing.
Britney Spears: No, I need to because when I don't it makes me out of shape so when I do start dancing again I hurt myself, like I did. So I really need to, but no, I don't. I hadn't danced in, like, I don't know how long and I go and like a goob, fall on myself and twist my knee!
Britney Spears: Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, BB again, Tommy Hilfiger. Those are probably the main ones.
Britney Spears: If they wanted to pursue a career, if you have a love for singing and dancing or whatever it is, I say go for it, because God's given you a talent, and I think you should express it and use it if he's given you wonderful talent like that. But if you mean in everyday life, what advice do you give teenagers? You know, just go for your dreams and go for what you believe in and stay confident with yourself and stay happy with yourself.
Britney Spears: Right now, I think that takes a lot of experience before you're able to start producing your own records, because that's a lot of involvement. But, yeah, I mean, probably two or three years from now I'd love to do that.
Britney Spears: I don't know, probably calling me all the time and getting on my nerves and following me. That's probably the weirdest thing.
Britney Spears: Probably Jamaica. No, no, no, actually Hawaii. Anywhere in Hawaii.
Britney Spears: I'm definitely going to be at home because all these computers, I hear, are supposed to shut down and I'm going to be sad. So my mom's like, "Britney, you're home." So I'm probably just going to party with my friends.
Britney Spears: Lauryn Hill, Natalie Imbruglia and Whitney Houston.
Britney Spears: Someone you can really trust. Someone who is really honest with you and tell you the truth about anything, even if you don't want to hear it. And someone who is like you and is a lot of fun and you can laugh together.
Britney Spears: Probably ėWizard of Oz.î That's a really good one. ėSomewhere Over the Rainbow.î That's like my favorite song, and I have Dorothy stuff all over my room!
Britney Spears: Really, when I meet famous people I get so starstruck I can't say anything to them. So, there was one time when I saw Ashley Judd and that was really cool because I'd just seen "Kiss the Girls" and she is a phenomenal actress, and the person who travels with me just started jabbering away talking to her. But I stood there like a complete idiot and didn't say anything. But she was really, really nice. And I really like that because you always worry how people are going to act when you meet them, someone you totally look up to. And you're always scared to really get to know them because you're scared you'll be disappointed. But I wasn't disappointed.
Britney Spears: Oh my goodness, I don't know. I've really met a lot of people, but I just can't really think. Like, Toni Braxton I've met before. And I've seen Whitney Houston but I didn't really shake her hand. Boys 2 Men, I don't know. Oh my goodness, I can't really think. And, like, I saw Shania Twain before and I've seen Lauryn Hill, but I just don't really say anything to them because I'm a goob. Because, I mean, what do you say? Hi? You know?
Britney Spears: Yes, I have at an Olmuth-Auburn game.
Britney Spears: That was a lot of fun.
Britney Spears: No, I do not. I want to learn how to play the guitar, but I don't have time to learn. So, one day I'll have to make time and set it aside.
Britney Spears: Yes.
Britney Spears: Probably Diane Warren because she is such a phenomenal songwriter.
Britney Spears: Actually, I'm looking at cars right now and I'm probably going to get the 300 Mercedes. I was thinking about the 500 but the only difference in them are the engines, and they look exactly the same. So I'm probably going to get the Mercedes, the SL. They're so pretty. It's got to be a convertible.
Britney Spears: Oh, it was a lot of fun to do. Yeah, yeah, we goofed off the whole time.
Britney Spears: Probably just like the different clothes and the different cultures and everything, I'm going to find really interesting. And I love trying new foods and stuff like that. That's going to be great.
Britney Spears: Let me see, I'm really looking forward to going to London again because the people there were awesome and everything was so nice. I just really love London. I can't wait to go back there again.
Britney Spears: I have a fan club, but I don't know if there's a way you could get a calendar or poster. I don't know. Probably just by in those teeny-bop magazines.
Britney Spears: Yes, I LOVE ice cream.
Britney Spears: My favorite food is pasta and hot dogs.
Britney Spears: I auditioned for it in New York. The first time I auditioned for it, which was in Atlanta, I was eight. But the second time, which was in New York, I was eleven.
Britney Spears: There's been talk of some movies, but none that I'm really interested in.
Britney Spears: For Mother's Day I'll probably, hopefully if I'm home, just spend time with my mom and probably do girl stuff and go shopping and go out to eat or something.
Britney Spears: My career goals are basically just to continue to do what I'm doing right now and just get better and hopefully grow as an artist and hopefully be a legend like Madonna or Janet. That would be really cool.
Britney Spears: No. (laughs) Probably because, right now I'm doing that. I'm totally slowing down with my leg. And it's really good, though ,because I needed the time off where I can just totally make my mind get sane again, because things do get crazy. But I'm about to go insane right now because I'm so used to being so busy. And once you're like that for a year, you don't know how to act when things slow down. But I usually get to go home every six weeks and see my friends. So I get to be pretty normal a lot.
Britney Spears: English, because I love to read, and history.
Britney Spears: Yeah, it's a lot harder.
Britney Spears: My favorite book is ėThe Horse Whisperer.î
Britney Spears: No, actually I just started getting to the point where I have nothing really to do in between sessions. But I need to go out and get a book and start reading something. But usually I just do my studies.
Britney Spears: Just be positive and go for your dreams. Thank you!

Britney Spears: Actually it wasn't that scary, because the nurses and everyone were really nice, so it was n't that bad..
Britney Spears: Yes, I love Daisy.
Britney Spears: A little bit of Spanish, not that much.
Britney Spears: I love basketball.
Britney Spears: Probably chicken and dumplings, I love that.

Britney Spears: One time i was on stage and my flight suit that my dancers supposed to pull didn't come off, and they were pulling and tugging, and it wouldn't come off. And the next time, i was on stage with Bewitched, the group that had been no stage before me, and one of the audience members had thrown a cupcake ons t age, and i slipped on it, and fell, and it wasn't very funny.
